WHEN A PLAN FAILS
Find another road to the same worthy end.
A failed method does not automatically make the purpose worthless. Release the route that no longer works and put your effort into what remains possible.

THE OBSTACLE IS THE WAY
Marcus Aurelius does not say that obstacles are good in themselves. He gives the power to the person meeting them. An event can prevent what you intended to do, but it cannot prevent you from responding with courage, patience, discipline, or good judgment.
The original action may be blocked. Your ability to act well is not.
THE OBSTACLE
The obstacle on the coin represents everything outside you that can interfere with your plans: other people, failure, delay, loss, illness, or circumstance.
These things can change what is possible. They cannot determine what kind of person meets them. The obstacle tests qualities that an easy road may never require from you.
THE INSCRIPTION
“What stands in the way becomes the way” describes the Stoic turn. Once the original path is blocked, dealing well with the obstacle becomes the path.
Reason adapts to what actually exists. Instead of requiring reality to return to the original plan, you ask what good action these circumstances allow now.
THE SOURCE
Marcus gives the mind a remarkable power: it can change its purpose according to circumstances and turn an impediment into material for its own activity.
“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”
MARCUS AURELIUS · MEDITATIONS V.20
CARRY THE PRINCIPLE
Carry the coin for the moments when the road refuses you. The obstacle may decide which path is available, but it does not decide the courage, judgment, patience, or determination you bring to it.
WHY CARRY IT?
The principle matters most when resistance makes you believe progress has ended. The coin keeps Marcus’ distinction close: the road can be blocked while your capacity to respond remains.

MEDALLION
